The Relais Sassetti

The B&B Relais Sassetti is part of the ancient Sassetti building, the palazzo where the family has been living since 1690. The B&B offers a unique experience where you can enjoy modern comfort in our 17-century building and it overlooks the backyards where during summer and spring breakafast is served.

The B&B Relais Sassetti features 2 different types of accommodation:

The Lions Apartment

The Lions Apartment is a two-storey air conditioned 66 square metres flat with independent entrance from the garden, comprising a tiny sitting room with sofa bed, satellite TV and kitchenette on the ground floor. On the intermediate floor, you will find a "dormeuse" which can be easily turned into a singlebed. A narrow corridor leads to the double bedroom and to a wide and bright bathroom. During your stay you can take advantage of a corner of the garden complete with a table to sit, chat, enjoy the weather.

Minimum stay two/three nights.

The Well Room

In 2010 The Well Room was opened to meet the numerous requests. Also this room offers a unique experience of modern confort in our 17-century building. The charm of the premise is enhanced by the Venetian floor and vaulted ceiling frescos both from the seventeenth century. The ensuite-bathroom offers all modern comforts.

Just outside the room there is the old well after which the room is named. During your stay you can take advantage of the garden. In summer the breakfast is in the garden; in winter you can have breakfast in your room or in my kitchen or in the pastry shop.

The Relais is in via San Francesco 69, a lively street where you will find all kinds of shops, just like in Hugh Grant's Notting Hill. The Relais is in the historical centre of Pisa, just behind the Verdi theatre, close to the Lungarno Mediceo and the Ponte di Mezzo, at a stone's throw from Piazza dei Cavalieri, Piazza dei Miracoli, the Cathedral, the Baptistry, and the Leaning Tower. The venues of the faculties of the University of Pisa are close at hand.

In Tuscany Pisa is set in an idillic location, you can arrive by car in 20 minutes to the beach, Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia or 30/40 minutes to Viareggio or Forte dei Marmi. Lucca in 30 minutes and Florence 50 minutes by train.

In the 13th century, the Sassetti were already a powerful family in Florence, and many of its members held very important positions within the government of the Comune. It was in the 15th century, though, that the family's fortunes took a sharp turn for the best, when Francesco di Tommaso Sassetti acted as the "General Manager" of the Banco Mediceo at the court of the Medici for 40 years. In 1560, the family moved to Pisa and Livorno in order to better manage their commercial exchanges with their Marseille subsidiary. In 1687, the family moved from the Kinzica district in Pisa to the San Francesco area of the same city to live in the Battaglia building, a palazzo they inherited from the women of the family. The building has a lovely 16th century façade which resulted from the merging of two Mediaeval case torri, the typical tower-shaped buildings of Pisa. Thank God, the members of the Sassetti family have been living there since then.
